In 2013 the government created the Primary PE & Sports Premium, designed to help children get an active start in life by improving the quality of PE and sports in primary schools. This funding is allocated to primary school headteachers. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
In March 2023 the Government announced a 2 year extension to the PE and Sport Premium funding, including additional funding for SGOs for 2 years and the announcement that schools will be required to deliver a minimum of 2 hours PE per week.
