Grange Primary Nursery in Kettering is a purpose-built, newly renovated pre-school which takes advantage of being part of Grange Primary Academy.

Established over thirty years ago the nursery has the advantage of being led by highly qualified and experienced staff.  Activities provide all children with opportunities to grow and develop in their own unique way, developing the foundations of the skills required to be effective learners.

All children benefit from recently refurbished indoor learning environments and a brand new outdoor area that is accessible all year round.  The children also enjoy access to our on-site Forest Schools sessions, the schools newly refurbished library, our dedicated Pastoral Team and Family Support Worker.

Other benefits of our nursery include access to hot meals that are freshly prepared on site, engagement with whole school events such as visitors, assemblies and community events.

As we are part of a school we have excellent transition arrangements with the Reception Class to ensure that all of our children move smoothly through into school

At Grange Primary Nursery we strive to create a stimulating environment for each and every child.  Starting school is a very important milestone in your child’s life; we work closely as part of Grange Primary Academy to help the children transition into Reception and support your family during this crucial stage of development.

At first glance, it can appear that the children are ‘only playing’ whist in the Foundation stage, however our trained team of Early Year’s professionals, including a fully qualiffied teacher know that a great early year’s education is based on the understanding that whilst children are playing, they are engaged and learning.   Your child will begin their work in EYFS by working on a range of practical and play based activities.  During the day there will be a mixture of adult initiated, child initiated and adult led learning opportunities as well as whole class, small group and individual activities.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is based on four themes and seven areas of learning.  These are:

  • The Unique Child
  • Positive Relationships
  • Enabling Environments
  • Learning and Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

As well as reporting on these, the staff within EYFS will be recording how the children are learning and which of the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’ they are showing.  We strive to create a safe, welcoming and engaging learning environment where children become confident to try new activities and communicate to new peers and adults.  We support and nurture children in their learning, we ‘celebrate mistakes and praise resilience’ and children who ‘have a go!’.

We appreciate that no-one understands and knows your child as well as you do, therefore we place great importance on home and school links.  We actively involve parents in their child’s learning and include those contributing to each child’s learning journey via Tapestry.  We appreciate the time and dedication it takes to share your knowledge and contributions about your child and would like to thank-you in advance for this support.

Handy hints to help your child settle in Nursery

There are many practical ways in which you can help your child before starting Nursery.  These include:

  • Talking to your child in a positive way about school in general, and what to expect.
  • Introducing ‘school vocabulary’ e.g. classroom, playground, register etc.
  • Help your child become more independent in dressing, putting their coat on, wiping their nose, going to the toilet, hand-washing, eating, etc.
  • We use a home/school book to share information.  If you have photographs of family and friends who will be on your child’s contact sheet then please stick them into the book.  It will help us to know who is who.
  • We encourage all Nursery children to have at least begun toilet training before they start with us.  We are happy to assist with this whilst your child is at school.  If your child still wears nappies or pull-ups, please provide us with spares and wipes to be left on their peg.
  • Clothes – Help your child to be independent, let them get themselves dressed even if they get muddled up (Velcro shoes are the best, children can manage these by themselves)
  • Your child may get wet in the water tray, may not make it to the toilet in time or get muddy in the mid kitchen – please pack a change of clothes just incase.
  • Please label EVERYTHING! We are not responsible for lost clothing.
  • Children will get messy – its all part of the fun and the curriculum!
  • We teach the children sounds of letters not letter names to start with.  We use a scheme called Letters and Sounds.  (Alpha blocks on CBeebies use the same pure sounds we teach
