Personal, Social and Health Education

Miss Benning

is the person in charge of PSHE at Grange Primary Academy.

At Grange Primary Academy, our PSHE curriculum is supported by the KAPOW interactive resource, as well as the Mind Up Curriculum. It meets the requirements of the DfE for PSHE and SRE education.

Our PSHE education supports the school’s aims of developing confident citizens and successful learners who are creative, resourceful, and able to identify and solve problems.

The teaching and learning of PSHE aims to give our children the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st century. The curriculum covers key areas which will support our children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships, and financial matters. It will support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society.

The children will access the following areas of learning:

  • Families and relationships
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Safety and the changing body
  • Citizenship
  • Economic wellbeing.

These five key areas are revisited in each year group, making pupil’s prior and future learning clear and progressive.

Throughout Key Stage 1 and 2, the children will have access to additional PSHE following the Mind Up program. This will be developed through starters of PSHE lessons and embedding skills learnt throughout the week.

A growing body of research shows that pupils who are emotionally healthy do better at school. PSHE education helps children and young people to achieve their potential by supporting their wellbeing and tackling issues that can affect their ability to learn, such as anxiety and unhealthy relationships. PSHE education also helps pupils to develop skills and aptitudes - like teamwork, communication, and resilience - that are crucial to navigating the challenges and opportunities of the modern world, and are increasingly valued by employers.

PSHE education helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.

We believe that parents welcome a partnership between home and schools which supports their children’s personal and social development, and help deal with issues of increasing complexity such as those related to mental health and staying safe, both online and offline.
